I'm Dr. Lauren Meilhede and I have been a pediatrician serving the Glens Falls area for over a decade. I am offering medical ear piercing to our local community. As a mother myself, I found that the demand for safe ear piercing for infants and children is greater than the availability in our area.

I have selected the Blomdahl Medical Ear Piercing System which is only available to medical providers.

The Blomdahl medical ear-piercing system provides a safer procedure for piercing your children’s ears. The earrings are in a sterile cartridge that attaches to the piercing device. The earrings are made of a medical plastic or titanium base and post which reduces the risk of developing a nickel allergy. An ear piercing is a small wound and should be treated as such. I will help guide you on how to keep the area clean and infection free while it heals.

How old must my child be to have his/her ears pierced?

I recommend piercing infants between 4-12 months old and children 5 years or older who are up to date with their tetanus vaccines. Waiting until 4 months of age ensures that your infant has had their first two sets of infant vaccines and allows the ear to grow big enough for accurate positioning of the earring. It may be difficult to pierce children between 12 months and 5 years of age because they often have trouble controlling their movements during the procedure and have a more difficult time participating with safe aftercare.

What are the risks?

Ear piercing is a minor surgical procedure similar to stitches. Despite precautions and using a sterile technique, there is still a small but rare chance of infection, scarring, or allergic reaction. I will ask you to sign an informed consent waiver at the time of the procedure detailing these risks.

How do I care for the piercing afterwards?

After piercing, you must clean the earlobe with soap and water or the included aftercare wipes twice daily until healed. Always use clean hands to touch ears and earrings. There is no need to rotate the Blomdahl medical grade plastic studs. You can replace the earrings in 6 weeks, however, I recommend waiting until 3-4 months for optimal healing time. You will be provided with an aftercare instruction handout for more detailed information.

Pricing as follows:

- $100 for current Adirondack Pediatric patients, $125 for all others.
